Dark Clouds Over Paradise: the Hawai'i Internees Story

The Dark Clouds Over Paradise Discovery Box was developed by the Resource Center at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i (JCCH) and funded by the Teaching American History grant and the Hawai'i State Department of Education, in alignment with the Hawai'i State Standards.
|
The box is a companion to Dark Clouds Over Paradise: the Hawai'i Internees Story, a display sponsored by the JCCH and the Hawai'i Council for the Humanities and open from Saturday, September 16 to Wednesday, December 27, 2006, at the Pacific Tsunami Museum. The box will be left with the Pacific Tsunami Museum for teachers to borrow and use.

What is in the box?

A teacher reference folder

Copies of primary sources, such as internee letters, poetry, song lyrics, photos, maps, military declassified information, etc.

DVD's (or videotapes) including an overview to internment, an internee oral history interview, and "Labels" - a short documentary that focuses on the effects labels, such as "nerd" have on young people.

Secondary sources, such as excerpts of books, and actual books
|
 |
Jig-saw cooperative learning activity with material for five small groups to do research on essential questions and report to the class as a whole
