1995 Student Essay Contest Winners

First Place:
|
|
The first prize was awarded to Travis Veriato, a 5th grader at Hilo Union School, Hawaii. Travis interviewed his mother Susan Maeda Veriato, about the May 23, 1960 tsunami.

Second Place:
|
|
Second prize was awarded to Aaron Gumbs, a 5th grader at Waiakea Elementary School, Hawaii. Aaron interviewed Fusaya Ito, a survivor of the 1960 tsunami.

Third Place:
|
|
Third prize was given to Malu Debus, a 5th grader at the Hawaiian Language Immersion School of Keaukaha, Hawaii, who interviewed his great grandfather Edward Soares Medeiros, a survivor of the 1946 tsunami. The original essay was written in Hawaiian and then translated into English.

The seventeen winning stories are on display at the Pacific Tsunami Museum.
