1997 Student Essay Contest Winners

First Place:
|
|
The first prize was awarded to Sara Nonaka, a 5th grader at Ele'ele Elementary School, Kauai. Sara interviewed her grandmother Kimiko Sakai, about the May 23, 1960 tsunami.

Second Place:
|
|
Second prize was awarded to Sara Cunningham, a 7th grader at Hilo Intermediate School, Hawaii. Sara interviewed Thor Wold, a 13 year old survivor of the 1960 tsunami.

|
Third Place:
|
|
Third prize was given to Keyralee Moses, a 7th grader at Ka'u High and Pahala Elementary, Hawaii who interviewed her uncle Albino Aguil, a survivor of the 1946 tsunami.

|
The seventeen winning stories are on display at the Pacific Tsunami Museum.
