1998 Student Essay Contest Winners
First Place:
The first prizes were awarded to Jaci Colomo, a fifth grader at Haili Christian School in Hilo, and to Isaac Goya, an 11th grader at Hilo High School. Jaci interviewed her grandmother Leonie Kawaihona Laeha Poy, who as a sophomore watched the 1946 tsunami destroy the school and sweep her friends out to sea. Isaac interviewed his dad, Tom Goya who, also as a high schooler, saw his family's service station obliterated with only a concrete slab sandblasted clean left in the wake of the 1960 tsunami.

Second Place:
Second prizes were awarded to Wesley Ching, a fifth grader at Waialae Elementary School on Oahu, who interviewed his neighbor Vivian Aoki who survived the 1946 tsunami at Laupahoehoe and to Audra Limoz of Pearl City High School who interviewed one of her teachers, Nova Jean McKenzie who escaped on the North Shore of Oahu on April 1, 1946 as the wave took away her grandmother's home.

Third Place:
Third prize awards were given to Naureen Fukui of Waiakea Intermediate School who interviewed Matilda Mooney and to Sierra Binek of Waiakea High School who interviewed LaVerne Tejada. Both of them are survivors of the 1946 tsunami in Hilo.
