1999 Student Essay Contest Winners

First Place:

The first prizes were awarded to Cody Lindsey, a 5th grader at E.B. DeSilva school in Hilo, and to Lori Kawamura, an 11th grader at Hilo High School. Cody interviewed his uncle Robert Fergerstrom, who was 8 years old at the time of the April 1, 1946 tsunami. Lori interviewed
Janet Fujimoto,a survivor of the May 23, 1960 tsunami.

Second Place:

|
Second prizes were awarded to Jasmine Kama, a 6th grader at Chiefess Kapiolani School in Hilo and to Robin Zirol, an 11th grader at Hilo High School. Jasmine interviewed Fusayo Ito, a survivor of the 1960 tsunami. Robin interviewed Norman Stevens, a survivor of the 1946 tsunami.

|
Third prizes were given to Leanna Arizumi, a 5th grader at E.B. DeSilva School who interviewed Lillian Pua Kaaumoana, a survivor of the 1946 tsunami, and to Cassie Tatsuno an 11th grader at Hilo High School who interviewed Geri Wong, a survivor of the 1960 tsunami.
