PICTURE OF THE MONTH
November 2009

George Curtis, noted tsunami expert, received an award for "Outstanding Scientific Advisor" to the museum. Our advisors provide invaluable guidance on all matters scientific!

After a long and productive career with the University of Hawaii, George is semi-retired on the Big Island and continues to be involved with teaching and advisory endeavors. Working with museum staff, George developed two interactive exhibits. At the Tsunami Warning Center Exhibit, the visitor can be at the warning center controls when an earthquake occurs and direct a Warning Center response. At the Wave Machine Exhibit, the energy of moving water is demonstrated, and the museum visitor can make waves!

"Tsunami Warning Center" and "Wave Machine" Exhibits

George also developed the inundation zones for the tsunami evacuation maps that Civil Defense has placed in telephone directories statewide. In addition, he initiated the statewide "Observer Program" for tsunami readiness and response. He serves on two state hazard commissions and is the tsunami advisor for Hawaii County Civil Defense.

This pic of the month honors George for his many valuable contributions. Thanks George!
