There's quite a buzz in historic downtown Hilo, and it is
loudest in the Pacific Tsunami Museum. It is the buzz of activity - many members of
the community working inside and out to preserve the history of our town, and inform and
educate the public on tsunami awareness.
|
The design team puts in long hours as they create the "Vault" Theater, the Keiki
Corner, and the Ocean Science Center. The old vault of the bank building has become
a small theater in which to watch films of survivor stories, and more. The Keiki
Corner is a special reading/viewing area where children
large and small can learn: What is a tsunami?, What does it sound like? What happens
to animals in a tsunami? The Ocean Science Center will feature four computer
monitors, with tsunami and ocean information on CD Rom for research and internet access.

Three college students are transcribing our survivor interviews, organizing our annual
membership drive and processing our Archive collection.
|
|
Our "tech" staff tapes and edits survivor interviews, keeps our computer systems
running smoothly, reformats our house videos for the exhibit touch monitors, and is
installing our future BayCam camera on the roof!

Our dear director works tirelessly to wear many hats and juggle many responsibilities.
She works right beside us as we paint walls and pillars, feeds us lunch, and keeps
us inspired. Without her this effort would not be possible, and would not be as much
fun.
|
|
Our volunteer docents are the heart of our operation. They provide a personal touch
to the time our visitors spend in the museum, and some of them are tsunami survivors
themselves.
|
|
Very soon our doors will be open 6 days a week, and we will need more docents. We
would love for you to join us. If you have hours to spare - even 1-3 hours per month
is helpful. Won't you join our team? For more information call us at
935-0926.

We do whatever needs to be done to make the Pacific Tsunami Museum a
special place for this community. Whenever we are tired or overwhelmed,
we just look out the front door across the Bay to the breakwater and remember why
we're here.
|
|
Let us not forget.
