What's New at the Museum?
| |
Papua New Guinea Exhibit
|
|
The Pacific Tsunami Museum highlights other major tsunamis of the Pacific Rim besides
those that impact Hawaii. Come see our newest exhibit, "Papua New Guinea - a
Decade of Destruction."
|
|
We thank Professor Hugh Davies of the University of Papua New Guinea, for sharing photos
and information about the tsunami of 1998 that struck the tiny villages of Sissano,
Warapu, Arop and Malol. Before this tsunami, Papua New Guinea suffered ten years of
other disasters; civil war, earthquakes, floods, landslides, volcanic eruptions and
drought. In 1998, a 7.0 earthquake in the New Guinea Trench on the ocean floor
generated the tsunami that left 2,202 dead and 10,000 homeless.
|
|
Professor Davies says, "Tsunamis are a part of the way of life in all of the
countries of the Pacific Rim. This exhibit should serve as a reminder of the risk
that tsunamis pose to all coastal communities, and should be a stimulus for us to plan and
prepare with this risk in mind."
|
|
"This exhibit is dedicated to the memory of those who lost their lives, and as a
tribute to the courage and resilience of the survivors and to the many selfless
people who have given and continue to give care and help where needed."

Keiki Corner - Reading Adventures
|
|
The Pacific Tsunami Museum is in constant flux, finding new ways to reach out to the
community and speak to every citizen. Our children represent our future. The
answer to their questions, about tsunamis and any other events that might impact their
lives, can often be found in books.
|
|
The museum is happy to announce that beginning Saturday, November 20, Christine Reed of
Basically Books will be presenting a "Reading Adventures" story time in the
Keiki Corner. It begins at 11:00 a.m. every Saturday through December 18.
Admission is free for parents and children who come in.

Do you know what a tsunami sounds like? How it smells? What it looks like?
Read all about it in our Keiki Corner. We have many books about sea creatures and
also Hawaiian stories and ocean science books. Grab a cushion and make yourself
comfortable on the floor and read these books.
